Kobido massage in Geneva: what are the benefits of this natural Japanese lifting?

What is a natural Japanese facelift?

Much more than a facial massage, Kobido is a true traditional art in Japan, just like the tea ceremony. From "Ko" (ancient) "bi" (beauty) "do" (way) Kobido means "the ancient way of beauty". Originally, this exceptional treatment was reserved exclusively for the Japanese imperial family and geishas.

Today, with its incredible lifting effect, this beauty ritual is attracting more and more people who want to fight against the signs of time. Or simply to give their skin a glow. So if you too wish to benefit from its prodigiously effective effects, let yourself be tempted by the Kobido massage in Geneva! We offer you a small overview of its origins, its principles and its benefits:

The origins of Kobido massage

Before the creation of Kobido or even shiatsu, Anma was one of the very first forms of massage in Japan. According to documents found, its origins date back to more than 4,000 years before our era between northern India, Tibet and Nepal. Anma techniques are said to have arrived in Japan from China in the year 562.

This gave rise to appropriations and adaptations by numerous Masters who used to hold friendly competitions to master their art. This is how Kobido was born in Japan in 1472. In a small inn in Suruga, south of Mount Fuji, two masters of the Anma confront each other in a demonstration of "kyoku te".

A kind of facial performed with a special percussion technique with the bent hand. After several months of competition, neither of them was declared the winner. The two masters then decided to combine their talents and found the House of Kobido, establishing the 48 categories of Anma massage, each distinct from the others, which were later developed into hundreds of techniques.

Over time, these have been passed on from master to student in a very closed circle, through a formative lineage of which the current holder of the knowledge, Dr Shogo Mochizuki, represents the 26th generation.

Kobido massage: a traditional and ancestral art

Originally, this treatment was first reserved for empresses, then geishas and the wealthiest families, and later became a traditional art for rejuvenating Japanese women. But it is especially Shogo Mochizuki who, by going to the United States in the 90's to teach Kobido, has contributed the most to its development worldwide. The learning of Kobido is a long and demanding training that goes through several levels, up to 4 for most practitioners. It involves not only the study of nearly 200 Kobido techniques but also its history and theory. After that, a select few may have the chance to go up to level 6, the last 3 levels usually being taught by Grand Master Shogo Mochizuki in person, by invitation only. It should be noted that even at level 6, practitioners remain "apprentices of the Master" until they have practiced for many years.

The principles of Kobido massage

Kobido is positioned as a holistic art whose philosophy is that beauty is only possible through a perfect balance between physical, emotional and spiritual health. Beyond the massage and its sublime lifting effect, Kobido also works on the harmonisation of chi, the vital energy circulating in our body.

By stimulating certain points along the meridians of the face, the practitioner can act on the digestive or nervous system and more globally on all the organs in order to rebalance the energies. For example, the channels of the large intestine and the bladder allow to stimulate the elimination and to act on the brightness of the complexion.

Those of the stomach and spleen help the skin to better absorb vitamins and minerals. There are thousands of Kobido massage techniques that are grouped into 48 different categories specifically designed to treat the face as a whole. Some come directly from the Anma, others are unique to the evolution of Kobido over the centuries.

Each of these involves many different techniques depending on the part of the face where they are performed. For example, if it is to reduce muscle tension or release toxins from the lymphatic system. Your practitioner will apply vibration techniques instead.

Other techniques include a wide variety of gestures such as effleurage, circular pressure and smoothing. Also kneading or percussion with the fingers, hands or wrists.

How does a Kobido massage session work?

In order to get the most out of this massage, it is advisable to come without make-up. You will be comfortably seated on a massage table where you will remain dressed, preferably in an outfit in which you are comfortable. The practitioner will start by analysing the skin of your face and neck in order to adapt her gestures to your needs.

During a Kobido session, your face is cleansed, moisturised and energised through the stimulation of your meridians. This beauty ritual starts with gentle pressure on your face. The modelling will continue with a harmonious mix of kneading, pinching, palpating, rolling, rhythmic and regular hand percussion. And this will be done on every square centimetre of your skin. It is advisable to drink plenty of water after each treatment as this helps to prevent muscle dehydration.

But it also allows your body to eliminate the accumulated toxins that were released during the massage. At the end of the session, you will immediately feel the benefits of the massage: relaxed face, brighter complexion, smoother features and above all a feeling of absolute relaxation! This feeling of firmness lasts for several days.

For longer-lasting effects, several sessions are recommended at the beginning of the treatment. Afterwards, you can space them out according to your skin's needs. The follow-up sessions will help to reduce expression lines and work on muscle flexibility. To accompany you in order to maintain your face and to keep the effects of the Kobido massage for a longer period of time.

The benefits of Kobido massage

Kobido stimulates the skin's microcirculation and the lymphatic flow of the face, which allows for a better supply of nutrients to the cells as well as the drainage of metabolic waste and the elimination of toxins. This ancestral beauty ritual also has an action on the cutaneous tissues, which it relaxes and softens while firming them, thus giving more radiance to the skin, promoting the production of natural collagen, reducing wrinkles and fine lines, plumping the skin, improving the muscular tone of the face and regenerating the epidermis. Finally, Kobido massage helps to release and harmonise the circulation of chi, resulting in a feeling of deep relaxation and, by extension, improving psychological well-being and sleep quality. When practiced regularly, Kobido helps to combat facial aging by reducing the effects of fatigue and stress on expression lines, fighting sagging skin, improving skin texture and relaxing facial muscles.
